Make sure to take a razor blade to the edges of that damaged area. You can use your fingernail and tap to hear the hollow sound. If it sounds hollow cut, it out. Give a good sanding with a 120 grit and seal the brown backing of the drywall with Gardz (Zinsser product) or oil base primer before you apply drywall compound.
