I have heard both sides of the spectrum but I am still unsure if it's needed in a 20 long nano reef tank. I mean first off if I have no sump can I even use one? I'm not sure how it even works.

I'm still in the beginning stages of researching ATOs, any help is appreciated.

I agree. Top up is important with a nano or pico. You probably get mixed reviews as most Nanos as some are closed top and others are open. My closed pico and closed nano hardly had any evap and I just topped it off once or twice a week. The pico I did a water change every other day, which salinity was altered to accommodate evap. I had a 20 stand alone frag tank and I had to top up as it evaporated quickly

+ another 1...

I have never bothered with an ATO in the past with 300+ gallon systems...but running my 25-30ish gallon sumpless frag tank I found it to be absolutely vital to keep the salinity stable enough for anything but the most basic corals...plus makes life much easier.
