Carbon needs slow flOw. If u run it in a reactor or hob filter, it can't tumble. It will break apart into dust and fill your tank. 30 gph for carbon

it won't harm the tank, i would put it in a fine mesh sock then in the filter, rinse the carbon before putting it in the filter.
fluval usually supplies  you a sock with their carbon.

how long do you leave it in for?

I change monthly and run it 24/7, with no period in between on where I don't run it.

I use around 1 1/2 cup on a 29G in a phosban reactor. I buy in bulk and also use tap water, so I use a little more then average.
