Fauna Marine Bacto Reef Balls reef-bacteria + enzymes in depot spheres

I recently purchased a 250 ml container of Fauna Marine Bacto Reef Balls as I have heard several great reviews and wanted to give them a try. I purchased the mid size container as per the directions I will need 12 every 2 weeks in my DT. I did not count the bottle yet, however there are a lot in there.

CONTENT:

Millions of live natural marine bacteria in depotballs for marine aquaria.
Bacto Reef Balls 100ml contains ca 100-110 spheres, each ca. 1cm average diameter.

DOSING:

2 Reef Balls / 100 Liters (26,4 US Gal) / every 2 weeks directly in your filter. Avoid that balls soak into pumps.

Reef Balls are made from a biodegradable polymer. Variations in size and rates are normal.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS:

For use in Reefaquaria only, not meant for human consumption. Keep out of reach of children and animals. Wash your hands after use.

Bacto Reef Balls are the first fully available marine bacteria to feature nutrient control through the use of time release technology; depot controlled nutrient control.

High Efficiency Nutrient Control
BACTO REEF BALLS contain highly effective bacteria cultures that control nutrient levels and help avoid unsightly algae growth in saltwater aquariums. Such results are achieved through the use of our timed-release carrier material.

Special Composition
The unique composition of our carrier material has been specially developed for use in seawater. It allows for a steady supply of diverse bacteria cultures to be added to the aquarium. Other materials such as normal gel acts as an additional carbon source and thus dissolves faster and makes controlled delivery impossible.

Ingeniously Simplified Dosing
Bacto Reef Balls are super easy to use. Simply place the necessary amount of Reef Balls into your filter and replace every 2 weeks when the original sphere is dissolved. Our seawater stable polymer matrix allows bacteria to be slowly added into the aquarium. A steady supply of beneficial bacteria removes the need for daily dosing and unwanted Dosage peaks.

Natural and Reef Safe
Bacto Reef Balls is the first bacteria-based product to feature time-release technology in a sphere. Both bacteria and carrier material are 100% reef safe and promote a healthy and natural aquarium. As soon as the bacteria is introduced into the aquarium, the bacteria begins its task and reduces nitrogens and phosphates. Our blend of bacteria has been specially developed to suit the needs of reef aquariums by providing a stable and diverse bacterial culture. Any excess bacteria becomes a food source for corals and protozoa and are skimmed by a protein skimmer.

BACTO REEF BALLS overview:

  • Crystal clear, healthy water
  • Simplifies nutrient control: reduces nitrogen and phosphates
  • Reduces unwanted algae growth
  • Provides cost-effective and efficient means of nutrient control
  • Supports natural bacterial flora
  • Eliminates annoying bacterial plaque and detritus build-up
  • Removes organic waste products
  • Reinforces the skimming process and minimizes cleaning intervals
  • Easy-to-follow dosage schedule
  • Unique depot effect, thereby effective for weeks per dose
DOSAGE:
Two (2) BACTO REEF BALLS per 100 liters (26.4 US gal), replace every 2 weeks
Begin with half the recommended dosage to assess the specific needs of your aquarium. Place Bacto Reef Balls in a high flow area of your filter. We recommend placing the spheres in a filter bag or stocking. In aquariums without a skimmer, begin with a quarter of the dosage.

TIPS:
  • Make sure the balls are not placed near the suction of a pump
  • BACTO REEF BALLS slowly dissolve upon contact with water slowly for the next 2-4 weeks. During this time, natural bacteria, as well as a highly effective enzyme solution is introduced into the water.
  • After adding BACTO REEF BALLS, your skimmer performance may significantly increase. This is the first sign of an increased nutritional degradation. With increase or removal of BACTO REEF BALLS, you can determine the exact needs of your aquarium.
  • A general dosage can not be specified due to the individuality of aquariums and their stocking levels.
  • We recommend that you start with half the recommended dose and gradually add more BACTO REEF BALLS until you achieve your desired values. Check with regular water tests.
STORAGE:
BACTO REEF BALLS contain live bacteria that live in their perfectly protected gel casing and supplied. After opening, store the product in a dark and cool area.
Consume the fractured BBACTO REEF BALLS within 6-9 months of opening.

I did add 12 to my DT yesterday and 6 to my seahorse tank. I believe this will take a little to notice any big changes, however after only 1 day, colors seem better, polyps are out more and water already appears cleaner. These are also supposed to help with nutrients due to the good bacteria eating nitrates and phosphates. My long term question that I am interested in is if these will reduce, if not remove the need for bio-pellets being that pellets primary use is to carbon dose a system leading to a growth in bacteria which consumes the same. This would be a huge cost savings over pellets as well as being 100x more convenient to use.

On to some pics.

Bottle is sealed and full when recieved. Also, the balls are in a fluid, so do not pour the balls out. I used a spoon to remove.

These are a lot smaller then I thought from reading about them and seeing pictures. Here is a size comparison.

They are a jelly substance and bounce really easily. They are just like orbeez balls, if you have kids, you may know what that is. They are solid all the way through.

I wanted to keep an eye on them over time and was limited on how to do that. I do plan on making a basket out of needle point mesh, the same material used to mod a tlf150 for biopellets. Once in water, they are almost invisible. There is 12 in there and all 12 sit on the sponge in one layer. It could have fit more still on one layer. There is good flow pushing through this reactor. They do need high flow.

Going on 24 hours with them and there is a noticeable change in the tank. Not photo noticeable. Just looking at all the coral, they are having a 'good day'. Explaining it is a little dificult. As an example, if you watch your corals closely, you know when things are going wrong and looking off. This is the complete opposite. Everything looks that much more On, for lack of better explanation. I have not changed anything else at this point. Zoas look more defined, same goes for my sps. Color is crisper on my sps.

My plan is to let things run its coarse. I will continue to add the recommended bacto balls while I let the pellets disintegrate. I go through pellets quickly, so I should notice changes in how quickly they melt away while monitoring nitrates.

So recommended not to have any other media in the reactor

https://www.facebook.com/FaunaMarinUSA/posts/1839865429578660:0

I have them in a mesh bag and its been two days, the Coraline algae is noticeable increased

Agreed. Much like bio-pellets, flow through the media is very important. There is nothing else in the TLF150. It should be in an open flow area where it can not be sucked into a pump. I wanted be able to keep an eye on them and did not have a media bag handy.

Great to hear about coraline algae growth. The short term has some immediate positives. It should be interesting over the next few days.

Well I have to say I have seen the same as TORX in the coloring and expansion of polyps after the first day of use. I removed my Pellet reactor a few days before I added the BACTO Balls as I have not seen any reduction in Nitrate like I hopped there would be. When I added the 8 balls ( 2 per 26 gal. ) The first thing I noticed after 30 to 45 min was the water became clearer and the Zoa's perked up, taller and the SPS polyps started to come out. After about 1 to 2 hours the colors on everything looked richer and popped a little more. I have a couple of small places with Cyano nothing bad, larger in the Sump and have noticed it has broken up some like holes in it and on one spot the color has faded. I was quite taken back on how quickly I did see some results, at first I thought it was just me hopping or wanting to see something but since I have added it, which was Monday late afternoon I have see nothing but positive results. Like TORX says the weeks ahead looks promising. " THEM BE MAGIC BALLS IN THAT THERE CONTAINER "
Should you go out and get some? From just what I have seen and heard ( Phos dropping to 0 after 2 weeks and Nitrate cut in half after 4 weeks ) I would say YES.

Many thanks. I see in this post even bigshow frags has it.

Those using it do we still need to use other carbon dosing like Red Sea Pro PO4/NO3 or pellets and GFO or just this is enough??

That since what I am looking to find out. It does reduce nitrate and phosphates levels. I guess the total end results will depend on how high your levels are.
