While checking out one of my local shops, I was told that the Flame Angel is no longer available in Canada due to the moratorium on fish from Hawaii. He said there are a few to be found, but at much higher prices.

A quick check on liveaquaria.com shows they are available in the US at normal prices and sources list Vanuatu, Cebu and Marshal Islands as well.

Are they really no longer available here? That would make me very sad as this is my angel of choice for my tank.

That is due to the fact that they are from Hawaii and there is currently a ban on aquarium fishing in that area. Supply and demand.
That's the thing. According to liveaquaria.com in the US they are from the following locations: Cebu, Christmas Island, Marshall Islands, Vanuatu. Those are not Hawaii. They are listed on sale at $35 USD. Something does not quite add up.

So, all Canadian wholesale goes through Hawaii? The discrepancy between the US price and CDN still seems odd.

One size is on sale for that price at liveaquaria. They are typically 54.99USD for small and 59.99USD for medium or 68.41CAD and 74.64CAD respectively. Sustainablemarinecanada.ca had them listed for approx $80. You cant compare US sale price to Canadian regular price on any product. Shipping and other expenses are more for Canadians then Americans. plus liveaquaria is basically a wholesaler with the quantity of stock they ship in.

If your store only deals with a particular wholesaler, then no, they may not be able to get them.

If their last stock one is from Hawaii, then Yes they will jack up the price for one of the last high demand now rare Hawaii Flame Angels.

I will beleive it when I see it from a reputable source. So far WSI is the only source starting the ban had been lifted. Not seeing anything from Fiji Fisheries or news. I do not trust WSI after reading several other statements they have made publicly.

Thanks, that makes much more sense. The dealer I spoke to specifically said that you cannot get this fish in Canada any more and that those at the high price (he quoted $150) were what was left in the supply chain. That sounded suspect since an outright ban would have been mentioned on forums like these.

Looks like I need to familiarize myself with the price of things though...
