Hahaha welcome to my world ! I have 2 jumper fish and a 15 pound bangle mix cat that loves to jump on the tank a glass lid is one of the bEst things you can use ! Dosent effect light transfer and keeps a lot of dust and hair out of the water AND help keep water evap out ! You can't go wrong . It has no effect on corals fish or anything just helps you sleep at night lol .

I prefer the screen lid over the glass myself. If you do decide to use glass make sure you keep it clean. If it gets salt creep or fogs up in any way which they tend to do it will definitely effect the light penetration.

I use a piece of white eggcrate that sits on my tank at night and when I'm at work. It's ugly but I remove it when I get home.

Glass would be nice, but its added maintenance keeping it clean, not to mention it wants to drip everywhere when you want to remove it.
Eggcrate lets in a good amount of light and does not need cleaning.

I also use eggcrate but I leave it on because I can't really see it as I have an edge surrounding the top of the tank that has a recessed lip for the eggcrate to sit on. One reason I like the eggcrate is that glass can often change the pH of your system and lead to needing other equipment like a CO2 system. The glass prevents the proper air exchange and makes it more difficult for nitrites to dissipate into the air. Just my 2 cents...

That is an interesting tidbit about a pH swing caused by the glass, I will have to keep that in mind for this other project I am working on.

I have a rimless tank, but I haven't completely ruled out building a tight fitting hood, being able to have the eggcrate there all the time would be nice.

Message jtacrylics he has acrylic frames custom to your tank size and puts a clear acrylic screening over it. Doesn't affect light and is beautiful so you don't have to worry about cleaning glass everyday
