I have a tank with two drains on the back glass. I believe they are 2" holes. How would you guys plumb it? I was thinking a 90* elbow herbie drain and flex pvc to sump. Would that be a bad idea with two 90* for a drain?

Thanks.

Is there an internal or external overflow box around the holes or just a bare tank with 2 holes in the glass?

Herbie requires 2 holes in one overflow chamber.

can you use 45s instead of 90s, you will get better water return...also, if you are going to use flex pipe don't use the clear, if there is any light near it will turn into an algae magnet, try and use black hose... personally, I prefer to use pvc. (hard plumb)..

you have an ideal setup my friend.

One full siphone line, one trickle/emergency drain line.

What your going to do is buy a gate valve for full siphone, you have to dial the valve in and a gate is the best way to do it.

You make the second line a simple stand pipe, dial your flow in and your good to go! (the emergency drain should be significantly higher than the full siphone.)

This method takes a bit to figure out, but once you do, its dead silent, ill try post a pic of mine, but check out my tank thread in members tank in the mean time.

Good luck!

also, it doesnt matter - 90's 45's or nothing, i simply have a strainer on my full siphone line. and my emergency is just a stand pipe

This is what I'm working with. Did all my homework on tanks that had the bottom drilled and got a tank with the back drilled.

It's kinda hard to see, but my full siphon drain is 3-4" below the water line
It also goes right out the back of the tank.

The stand pipe does go through the bottom, but if you put a 90 turned up on one of the bulkheads that will make it higher than the other right away.

Just put a strainer of the full Siphoned line, or a 90 turned down

This is my sump with the gate valve
Basicly just a tiny trickle goes through my emergency line

I see now. So just a strainer inside the overflow box on the bulk head for main drain and 90* elbow inside overflow box for emergency drain.

Thanks!

a down turned 90 might be a bit better, because you do need some distance between the mouth of the full siphone and the top, otherwise air will find a way into it.

But a strainer is pretty important too, one stray fish or snail could clog up the gate valve pretty easily.

P.s. believe it or not, I'm not an artist.

That might work, but you prob need more distance between. The drain and the top the stand pipe, I have 3-4".
The less space you have the harder it becomes
To dial the siphone in

So what you would do different is have the main drain on an elbow facing down with a strainer?

That would be ideal. If you have the space.
Might be a bit cramped with that small overflow though.

Or just ad a small piece of pipe into the upright 90
