I used to have a 46 gallon bowfront upstairs on carpet. I used a sheet of Styrofoam between the tank and stand and when full it leveled out nicely. But before you fill it you might want to level it and see how bad it is. Find some shims that you can put below the stand to make it as level as possible. In time it will compress the carpet and become more stable.

I've used the standard white, blue insulation type and pink type from lowes. If the stand almost sits perfectly level. The white should be fine. 1/4"-1/2" will do just fine if the floor is pretty level to start with

Yes the carpet really keeps the tank mark. You have to put something over it like a couch or a bigger tank!! Woot on the bigger tank.

good advise, just remember to check the level with each set, the floor, the stand, the tank (empty), tank half full. You can buy shims at any building store. Does your stand have a solid base to set the tank on or is just braced in the middle, if it doesn't have a solid base then using Styrofoam will be useless..

I always use Styrofoam. Years ago I had my first 180 gallon reef set up on a metal stand that sat on a wooden board and because i didn't think i needed it i never used it. It was enough to crack the bottom of my tank after a week and dump all the water onto my floor from the 180 and my 65 sump. I came home to a basement that was flooded, had no power, a cracked heater and a broken sump pump. Lets just say i learned my lesson the hard way.

Not 100% true. Maybe for a rimless tank. But most traditional tanks that have trim on the bottom. You'll notice that only the trim touches the stand. So even if your stand isn't solid base where the tank sits. It will still benefit from styrofoam and only the edges touch anyways. The styrofoam will settle and help take any imperfections out of the stand/tank and allow it to sit more level. Won't solve a large 1/4" spacing. But will help either way.

Unless you're 100% sure your floor, stand and tank are true and level. I'm a firm believer in using Styrofoam in all installs

something else to check is vibration around the tank, set up the stand and ump on the floor in front, if anything moves you can always readjust..
