Sps In Holding Tanks

I am seriously moving towards replacing my 180gal with a proper peninsula style tank but since the new build will occupy some of the same real estate as the old tank it will probably mean moving all the livestock into other tanks for a bit so I can get rid of the 180 and get the new tank up and running in its place.

Since there have been so many moves and upgrades in this community I was wondering what success people have had with their corals surviving in holding tanks short term especially SPS colonies.

Time to grab the best deal you see for a used setup. When I moved my stuff across the room, I had a small tank setup for the move. I filled it with existing water, pulled everything over to it. And let it run. Lights, and skimmer, just like it would have been in a proper setup. Filled/fast cycled the new tank, then put it in.

If you can, find a couple bins for your existing water. Toss the rock in some fresh saltwater, rinse it, and get the debris off. Clean any pests off while its out. Then put the rock in the holding buckets.

Take your time with the new tank, and move it all back when you are done!

Also, if you have some prized corals, take them, and make some small frags. Heal them in your system, and move them to someone elses tank. Just incase you have any losses.

try to maintain as much stability as possible, and see if you can keep things going as is until your ready for the move

I tried setting up a new system and didn't have a good result, it was just not ready.

Luckily there are several around still growing out the sticks I used to have within my old system

Thanks for the input guys. I will have space limitations to play with. Part of the deal is the wife gets new flooring in the living room/dining room that the tank divides. So I think the best option I have is to set up the big sump in the basement ahead of time with a stand pipe in the drain flowing into a spare 40 breeder sump (a sump under the sump...lol) for skimmer and reactors then pump back to the other end of the big sump. I will have room for all of the rock and corals and even some substrate from the old DT so it should minimize change. Flow will be different obviously but hopefully things will adapt.

You gotta have a plan, sounds like you do. That's great. SPS don't like fluctuations in Temp, PH, Salinity and lighting. Fish get stressed as well, You may experience some losses but in time your tank will be much better. One thing I strongly believe in is using new sand not rinsed just keep some to seed the tank if you want but your Rock should do the trick.
