Tunze or MP pumps or anything else

I'm gonna be upgrading my pumps in the near future and was wondering what you think are the best, Tunze or MP pumps or something else, I'll be buying 2 and my tank is 150 gl

i own/owed,

Korila (400, 1050 and 1400)
Vortech (mp10wes x2 ) - very fragile/loud but awesome flow pattern
Tunze (nanobox and 6095) - 6095 brings tunze game up to vortech like flow. They now have "wide" cages for alot of their controllable pumps.


Tunze wins due to low noise, power and overall industry experience.

I think for your tank a wave box and possibly a couple 6105s is the way to go. The wavebox controller will control your 6105 so you can sync em up! Keep an eye out on canreef - these items come up for sale regularly. If you can wait, the summer is the best time to buy used equipment for people get busy and give up on reefing in the summer.

I like the small in tank footprint and flow of the mp10 I have, Haven't experienced loud noise from it at all, but a lot of people say they had problems with noise. If the inner and outer parts are not lined up it'll give off a loud noise.  I run mine 80-100% reef crest mode.

I never tried the tunze powerheads, i'm sure they are great too.

I have mp10s and there quiet. Love them. Also had a mp40 at 1 poinnt and that was loud compared to the 10s. Never had tunze but I like having only a small powered head in the tank aswell.

I've had MP40 and MP10  As well I've had Tunze  and I am leaning towards the Tunze because they're quiet and dependable. Does the Wavebox take up alot of room in the tank and where do you place it?

you wont notice it in the 150.
I would but it up against your overflow box (assuming you have a black acrylic overflow box like everyone else)

tunzes are silent - though the wavebox does have a slight hum. The windup of the vortechs was annoying. They were placed perfectly and i even replaced a wetside. The tunze benefits from the water muting the noise.  You also get many placement options with Tunze - you can't place a mp10 in a corner.

Directionality (is that a word) is also a benefit of the tunze.  You can angle, point up or down which you can't do with MP's

I just picked up 2 mp40 in a tank I purchased. They are neat units that have a ton of settings which I like.

The Wavebox is fairly large but you could certainly get away with it in your tank by putting it in the back corner. 2 - Tunze 6105's and the Wavebox would be lots of flow. I have a 6101 (older model) but it is in great shape if you want a better deal than buying new. Bill at IA posted on KWAS that he has a used Tunze controller and pumps for sale. Not sure how much he is asking.

I tested a MP40 on my system and I found it a little loud. The winding noise is kind of annoying when they get closer to 100% power. The programming is very cool and they seem to work great. But, if your system is dead silent,you will hear them. The Tunzes are extremely quiet. You can hear the Wavebox a little but it's not bad at all.

i have 2 mp40s wireless in my 90. if i put a frag in a spot and use the underwater epoxy the flow will pull it off basically and i have them turned down. although the tunze can be directed the mp's have such a broad flow pattern you dont need to aim them. just my opinion lol.

The Tunze pumps are brilliant IMO they just work away silently and very efficient.

I haven't had any vortechs but feedback from friends makes me wonder about their quality control as they are either great or noisy and troublesome.

The one tunze product that seems to have the same issue was the nanowavebox some I have seen rocking a 125 and some noisy and barely moving a 75.  I think they have discontinued it  or changed it because the manufacturing required a lot of hand fabricating and that created inconsistencies.

I'm gonna go with the Tunze pumps, I'm not in big hurry for them so I'll keep an eye out for them. My tank will be FOWLR for awhile. Thanks for your input
