Anemone Help

Hey all,

I have what I think is a neon green long tentacle anemone

The day I bought him home on Sunday he was puffy and big but was hiding his mouth which I thought was normal

Starting yesterday his mouth was open and he ended up detaching from the rock he was on

I then read that these guys like to be on the sand bed so I moved him to a place in the tank with med flow on the sand and his mouth is now bigger than ever

I’m worried he’s gonna die or something soon and I really don’t want him to, colours are amazing

My tank is a 120

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
nitrate 10
Alkalinity 16
Salinity 1.026
Ph 8.3
Temp 77

Is he still acclimating or is the end?

He’s not secreting anything, just open mouth

As for po4, I haven’t measured that yet, will check it out and see

Po4 is .25

And are you sure this is a ritteri anemone?

I’ve not see one with this type of colouration and tentacles like his

Also when I fed him some Mysis shrimp he closed up then went back to open mouth again

I’ll wait it out I guess

So as an update the nem detached and moved to a corner of the tank and has retracted almost fully, I’m less concerned with this behaviour than the open mouth, or am I wrong in my thoughts?

Well in my option if I’m reading this right alk at 16?! It should be around no higher then 8.5 (yes some people will have it between 9-10) mine floats around 7.8 and everything’s doing well ,

Po4 I don’t think is the issue , 0 is better ,

As of your anemone it could be a few things , 1 your typical anemones like rock work better , they will move around until they can hide the foot well in the rock work because it’s foot is the weakest spot if it were to get attacked,

I don’t feed my anemones. I feel if the colour starts to fade then sure , but no more then a chunk a food once per week or 2. But it’s important for good light ( make sure to start them low and move them up , unless they move them self’s)

As for it’s mouth , depending on the last owner it could have been fed to much and could possibly be rotting form the inside out ( which probably isn’t the case)

I guess over all I think it’s just stressed and trying to find a spot , I’d hold off on the feeding and keep it in low med light (maybe around 80-120 par) and lower flow , anemones only like a med flow when they are happy .

If you see it go to mush then it’s dying/ dead .

I hope this helps ya ! Just keep in mind anemones are a very interesting in good ways and bad , I’ve had over 12 since I’ve been in the hobby for just about 3 years , and I’ve only had 2 die and the other 10 were from one that kept splitting every 3-4 months . I really hope all the best for you keep us updated !:)

get yourself a seachem ammonia alert, if it dies that thing will go nutts and tell you and you can remove it. Its basically just a strip you stick inside the aquarium that will change color if ammonia is present, i use them when cycling since they are only 8 dollars

Thanks guys

The alk is 11-12 not 16 typo on my part

I read a forum that said for this type of anemone to bury the foot as they like to be in sand

I did that yesterday and this morning it’s opening up a little so I’m hoping he comes around

My rbta has been doing very well and I’ve had it for months so I’m guessing/hoping it’s just stressed out from being in a new home

Thanks to all for the advice

Another update

He’s a goner I believe, wife took a pic and sent it to me, she mentioned that tentacles falling off etc and so I asked her to promptly remove it before it poisons the tank

It’s really sad cause it looked so nice, but I believe I’ve learned my lesson to stop buying live stock from this particular store

I’ll be honest, everything I’ve ever bought from that store hasn’t lasted a week, 2 Mandarin goby dead in 2 days, some zoas that were very weak for a month and now this nem... I guess I’ve learned my lesson, only buy from fellow reefers
