Anenomes in reef tanks?

My clowns keep trying to host my few LPS corals (the Duncan and open brain).  I figure getting them an anenome could be a way to potentially solve the problem but it could also introduce a whole host of other problems.  Beth says no way should I get one, it will just sit either on the glass or my most favourite/expensive coral.

i vote for no way and i love anemones. its too risky unless you have a very large tank or plan to go with something thats not a BTA. With a large enough tank you can keep something like Hadonni, Gigantea, or H. Magnifica that arent going to walk all over and destroy your SPS( Magnificas walk but not like BTAs do)

i started with 2, a green and a rose, i then added a flametip and stopped with like 12 a few months later. once you start spending good money on corals, its hard to justify a walking coral nuker in your tank, much less 12

actually there was a very very nice blue hadonni in sea life central for the rediculous price of 79 bucks... if its still there that would be something to consider if you've good high lighting and good flow and room on your sandbed somewhere for it. your clowns will also dive in it almost instantly since its their natural host in the wild(assuming you have percs or occs)

like this but not as colored up and acclimated as this one.. but the potential is there.. and at 79 bucks your saving like 200 or 300 compared to the last blue carpet i saw in Toronto.

I agree.  I tried it. BIG MISTAKE.

t wouldn't stay put and went around the tank destroying everything.  I think I ended up giving it to Duke.

It can be done, but be prepared for it to run a muck in your tank!

I have read far more negative stories then positive ones about nems' in a reef tank.

no doubt your clowns will move to your anemone. here is the problem.  I bought one and it grew and yes, it touched corals, zoos and sps, will kill or brown the ones it touches. once it clings to rock, it s hard to move. bu t nothing better then clowns hosting. id still get one.

Mine stung 4 frags, then walked directly into the powerhead, exploded and polluted the entire tank.  I hated them before I had one, and now hate them more.  Good thing I did it in a frag tank and not the DT.

I vote no.  nuke them from orbit.

I have a green carpet Haddoni in a 65 gallon tank with five Clarki clowns.i have had this anemone for three years and it is quite happy under powercompacts and fed every other day silversides.a mated pair of Clarkis reside in it while the other three hangout in other areas.now in my 180 lps softie system I have tried bubble tips but have lost them due to my large female maroon and her smaller  mate  loving them to death.a month ago I found a large Long Tentacle Anemone and it has settled in quite nicely as has the maroon pair.in summary I think in the right setting they are worth the trouble but I see the problem of them travelling if unhappy and causing destruction in a high end sps tank.

I forgot to add that is an amazing price for that blue Haddoni.i seen one in Mississauga for 175.00 and was tempted but didn't want to risk losing some of my fish to it in my 180 as they have a reputation for devouring anything that touches their sticky tentacles.

I agree, it was hard to walk away from it, but I have no room for it what so ever.

In this hobby you gotta learn to walk away from things.....
Do your research before just throwing livestock or product into your tank.....and listen to others. :)
If you keep a lot of other corals in the tank then it is important to be aware that anemones can move and wipe them out. Yes, some people have had success where they have not moved much....yet. Others not so much.... Just be aware and don't act surprised if you find the anemone on top of some corals one day or blown to smithereens by a Powerhead.
It's not just anemones that can be dangerous in you tank either.....lots of lps have long sweepers that will stung other corals to death as well. I love Favia but man can it get long stingers!!

Hadonnis aren't walkers but I agree research would need to be done by the op before jumping on that purchase, Hadonnis are not for the beginner. I just wish I had a tank big enough to keep one myself.

I said I wasn't gonna get any clowns because they harass the hell out of LPS and no Anenome for lots of reasons and here I went out and purchased a Tomato Clown, what was I thinking, Should a walked away, In this hobby more than most we Live and Learn. Hopefully our mistakes aren't Reef Threating.

Never had any clowns harass any of my lps either, they have hosted in a torch at one point but it doesn't bother it one bit.

Thanks for all the input guys.  I wasn't strongly considering an anenome, but it was an idea floating around my mind so I wanted to hear from others.  You're all definitely swayed me against getting one.  The clownfish don't seem to be damaging the lps so it's all good I suppose.
