or wanna be owners :)
I think I've decided to go with an octopus or a jns (aquamaxx) for my 125 setup. Just wondering if any owners has good/bad feedback. I've done enough research I'm comfortable with the purchase but alittle more questioning or reassurance would be good.

I've also found so far at least this looks to be an Amazon purchase vs Canadian pricing. So far it's not even in the same ballpark for can vs us pricing. Given it is so close to the holidays I'm holding off buying until Boxing Day sales come out I think

I just bought the reef octopus SRO 3000, havent used it yet since its for my 135g build, but i definately cant wait to use it. I did a test run on it and is dead silent. But i agree.with Eric, they do have a big foot print.

I have the SRO-3000 Internal skimmer. This pulls some of the nastiest crap out of my tank. I cannot speak if it is better than any other skimmer as I have never tried anything else, but it seems to work. lol

i have the 150b classic cone and even with a Fair sized bioload in my 125 it keeps up.... the gunk is dark as dark can be and cup full after two days have used a coralife and marine sources before but am impressed at how quiet the reef oct is and performs even better than i could have anticipated

Have the Reef Octopus 300DC and super happy with it, barely a noise to be heard from it which is a HUGE improvement over my previous skimmer. Go with a DC pump if you can, gives you another method to fine tune things. You can see / not hear it running in one of the you tube videos in my build thread (link in my signature below)

Having had both a SRO and a JNS/Aquamaxx skimmer, I would go with the JNS ConeS CO-2if you can find one in stock. Easier to dial in and less temperamental. If I recall correctly a smaller footprint too, albeit by a very nominal amount. The bubble blaster pump on the SRO is a bit quieter though than the Sicce on the JNS.

I run a reef octopus as well. Never ever ever have to clean the pump for some reason, I think it's been running for almost 2 years. It does take up a lot of room, but just in case I do have to clean the motor I never again want to have an internal design like the most awesome bubble magus.

Indeed I did. NAC6. It had major startup problems, and then shorted itself out in the water, as did the replacement atman 2500 pump. I think they still sell that utter POS.

The design was terrible, they made the casing about 2mm bigger than the pump, then shoved the pump inside, with the cord crammed at a sharp 90 deg angle, which I'm sure how water kept getting into the housing. The startup issues I assume were because it is just the worst pump in the world. I think they did a recall on it at some point, because they were responsible for 5000 deaths in papa new guinea when one was dropped into the ocean there plugged in.

It's also one of those skimmers where they say "you have to break it in for a year before it will make skimmate". Something to do with the radioactive asbestos lead additive they use in the plastic.

This made me almost spit up my lunch, I laughed so hard. I can and will say that bubble magus has came a long way since the atman 2500 pump. Which was a mass produced pump stuck into many skimmers.

I'll a passing Glenn's rant onto bubble magus, to just see what is said. lol

Atman 2500 is no longer used, the new pump is one that rocks.

The new bubble magus pump is one, if not the only company that has had CSA tests and approval done on there pump. Not sure if it passed in New Guinea though.

At the time, there was absolutely, no way in god's green earth that you could "talk" to bubble magus. They knew review were horrible, they knew about the papua new guinea incident, and they knew for approx 3 years (at least) that the atman was a shit mass produced pump, but they kept putting them out anyway. they just didn't want to hear about it, or have to service it. It took me months to find a replacement pump, and it was just as shitty. There was no webpage, no email, nothing. Now I see they at least have a web page.

They just laughed off my complaint and said "old news". Well lookee here:
http://www.fish-street.com/bubble_magus_nac6__nac6a_protein_skimmer

Still for sale, even though they say it isn't. Which likely means "no support". Oh and it's "custom make for atman 2500" it says in the description.

unibob, let them know their "old news" is still fresh in some people's mind. Oh and their "mesh" pinwheel design (which they charged extra for) was crap, it split apart under normal use and the mesh got loose and jammed the skimmer. "custom make" indeed!

I see on their webpage they still have the internal design for the pumps. So just remember that every time you want to clean it, and every time it won't start up, you have to get that whole skimmer out of the sump, and take it apart. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I see they have a couple that are external, but considering their rich heritage, I wouldn't buy a single thing from them (sorry bob).

Reef octupus. Did I mention mine has been running for more than a year without cleaning? custom make that way!
