is this hair algae? It keeps growing back, we are using algone, and doing 35% water changes every week. We are also manually removing it, but it won't go away.

I am going to get my son a sea hare and then get rid of it once the algae problem is cleaned up, as I don't like that creature:)

I tried a Sea hare, back in the first year of having a saltwater tank. They don't eat enough algae or the hair type to be worth the trouble. They also are incredibly hard to keep alive in my experience.(limited) they will die and can release poison that could have serious side effects ( kill life in aquarium).

Listen I was like you, looking for short cuts quick fixes anything to resolve the issues, I tried hydrogen peroxide with disastrous results. No one here is trying to mislead you.

I really, really wish some of the incredibly talented and successful hobbyists would write articles about maintenance and tips that they have found worked for them.

I believe consistency is the key.
Then once you have the basics understand then you can tweak tune your system until you have amazing results.

GFO and mix up some pickling lime.

GFO will keep down the phosphates, pickling lime can be cooked into a paste that will burn out the aiptasia. Don't get a sea hare, there's a reason people never say "yeah, that's my sea hare, I've had it for 10 years now". Simply can't be kept in captivity unless you can feed it (it doesn't just live on hir algae).

Start with a "good" phosphate test.

Sea hares will eventually starve... they will eat hair algae but the algae in the aquarium is does not have enough nutrients in it to sustain them... if you do buy one you need to buy supplemental algae to support them
.. when they do die they release a black liquid that looks like ink and you will want to remove asap. Does your tank have a protein skimmer...

Thanks for the advice. We pretty much had the algae problem under control and have been attacking it on ALL fronts recommended by everyone on this forum. Then we went away for 10 days and came back to a full lawn. Our husbandry is top notch. Not sure what else to do since so many seem against a Sea Hare.
