Jeez, if you buy a new item for the tank (btw thanks Al, it cleaned up real nice and looks awesome!), be sure to check the size specs real carefully.

To get the new skimmer in, the whole sump has to be removed... I might snap a few pics of just how insane this is going to be.  If there is a spectacular FAIL on this, there will be a nice HUGE skimmer for sale.  :?

Ah well if nothing else I might finally get shutoffs on my drain and return lines... glad this is the quiet time of year with lots of time to do crazy huge projects.

I will say, I'm not sure why a skimmer with a collection cup the size of a buick doesn't have a drain line installed in it.

shorty turboflotor 5000.  With a 40 gallon sump under the tank, it won't go in unless I pull the sump, put the skimmer in, then reinstall.  Fortunately HD of all places had all the parts.

The other option was to run it external, but not really an option I care for on a used skimmer with old o rings.

Heh, yeah that was the one I got.  It had a footprint of 12X12 so it -should- have fit, bit it doesn't count the spigots that are glued on, so really it's 13X14X18, and well that just ain't going to sneak between the tank bottom and the sump.

Totally sucks because all my apex outlets and powerbars are attached to the plywood base, so they all have to come out before the base will come off, and the base has to come off before the sump will come out..... this will be a late night excursion.  Glad I have guinness to keep me company.

Well, it's rated for 400 gallons, so a 400 gallon must have a 90 gallon sump, and maybe even that wouldn't fit it.

After more work than I would wish on my mother in law, I realized that while I -might- be able to get the skimmer in the sump, either a) the outputs are blocked, or b) the pump doesn't fit.

So this skimmer will be up for grabs once I put the shattered pieces of my tank and life back together.

Vince, thanks for the offer.  I seriously would need a different sump and stand to make it work.  Even external,  I would need to drill the sump, and instead I'll just keep searching for the ideal skimmer.  :?

....I really do need to buy a ruler!!! :sigh:

can you cut the spigots off then turn the skimmer to put newons back on?or you could take out a baffel.

heh, no but I can just re-sell the skimmer and count myself lucky :)

This beast is just too big.  I have an upgraded pump for the bubble magus I have now, but it means killing the skimmer for  a day or so to do the mod right.

Too bad, she's a beaut.  On the plus side, I now have a full set of shutoffs on my pumps and return lines that I didn't have before, and things got nicely reorganized under the hood, so all was not lost (except 8 hours of spine creaking labour)  ;D

It's a NAC 6A
No I serviced the 2500 and got a needle wheel, but those pumps are so bad at voltage leakage.  I have a brand new sicca psk 2500 with yellow pinwheel sitting here, but it has to be mounted external with an internal downpipe (which I think they all should, after dealing with an internal pump design).

Actually the magus is working great, it's really just that pump that is the issue.

that pump may be a little too powerful - i looked into moding my SWC which has similar specs to your BM unit and uses an atman2500 pump.

the new sicce 1000psk pumps or the atman 3000 pumps would be ideal i think. The sicce you have may over power your skimmer - the reaction chamber may not be big enough but it never hurts to try!

I had a link to a mod that used that pump, and -supposedly-it worked, but yeah, that's why I think I'm going to just go with an octopus.  I think I'm going to avoid anything with atman pumps on them, they just seem to be problematic.
