So I took the plunge and bought a calcium reactor. Bought the reef octopus 6.5" reactor with Milwaukee valve and solenoid. I am buying a tank locally here at a beer store and later on the Milwaukee ph controller. Bought all from bulkreefsupply. They were out of stock for ye controller. Anyway, being a total noob with ca reactors my question is, who runs them?

I'm assuming instructions are included for hookup and it seems rather basic but where do I start? How do I know how wide to open the valve and how many bubbles I need per second. I know I need to test my ca and alk and then monitor for weeks until properly dialed in but I'm looking for some help. Anyone wanna chime in and gimme some advice?

No I decided to try the reactor Instead. I just upgraded my bulbs Tuesday to 250 watt 20k radiums. Incredible bulb I must say. Very bright and blue. My skimmer is rated for 1500 gallons at full throttle so I am running only 2 of four pumps. I am starting bio pellets when the reactor comes in. I figure between good lighting, pellets, heavy skimming for the pellets, and the reactor running I should be set. My tank took a hard crash this year. Lost all coralline. Lost all sps. Mainly due to neglect I'm thinking but I'm back Into it. Just need to k ow how to properly dial in a ca reactor

I have always used the Korralin reactors, figuring the bubble rate was pretty easy.  In that reactor if you added too much co2 it would accumulate at the top of the reactor (since the water can only adsorb so much co2) and so you backed off the co2 until none accumulated or did so very slowly.  All reactors are a bit different, and I found a lot of "dialing in" threads on RC for different units.

PS - how much for a tank at the beer store?
