I actually run one on my 90's return....Wavemaker it is not....It sort of works but not the real deal!!!!

I think it looks interesting and would definitely be doable for the returns. As a DIY project, it would be fun if the product was a good one.  Not knowing anything about wavemakers, I can only speculate but am very interested in the responses to your thread.
I was actually thinking of something like this for my seahorse tank.  It already has a branching return and could easily fit this kind of system.

Is it more for alternating the flow of the water and could help with dead spots in the tank?

They create a fair bit of head pressure, 3/4" are sealed and need some modding to be cleanable, 1" addressed that issue but the only person I know who tried one went through 4 defectives (quality/design issue with internal parts) all replaced under warranty, but not confidence inspiring.

Great idea..."poor man's" Oceans Motions...quality/execution???

Got it in a package deal and had it on my 40...Moved it to my 90, so I guess I don't hate it! ;D

I have the 3/4 version and it is a pain to clean...Shut down the tank disconnect the 3 fittings rinse with vinegar and reinstall! Only have to do that once in every six months....
It also decreases your return flow as mentioned...But it does switch the flow from one side to the other randomly and frequeltly and gives ok water movement. ( depending on tank size, pump size!) 

But in my 90 the 3/4 isn't enough alone.... Again it is no wavebox!!! Seeing Rob's 75 with the wavebox and another guy I know has one in his 240....the wavebox is the real deal! Just not allowed to spend that kind of money on a "plastic box with pumps" as the wife put it...If only I could sneak one into the tank she would fall in love with it! She loves the tank, fish and corals...just not all the money I spend on them! And the time I spend on my tanks instead of finishing all the reno's in the house! LOL!!!
