Cleaning Your Tank?

Hey fellow reefers. My buddy Quartapound got me Into salt water with his beautiful tank ( Thanks Shaun). The tank I have is a 34g Solana and I'm looking for ways to clean the bottom of the tank. It's dirty from fallen food and pieces from the rock that I put in. Now I have the baster to pick some things up but I am just looking for other ways.

Any ideas?

Thanks everyone.

First off, hold off on feedings. If food is staying on the bottom, you are feeding too much

Second, get a CUC (Clean Up Crew) full of snails and other inverts that eat waste. Sand sifting goby's are nice (my 5 year olds favorite fish actually) and/or a star fish would definitely help eat it.

Third, flow, lots of flow and the food typically will not settle :)

I do not think I have ever used a syphon on my tank to suck up debris. I have used a turkey baster to blow off rocks from the sand and such that builds up on them, but even that, I just let the flow and sock in my sump remove it.

I bought a handy grav vac with a wee hand pump on it so you don't need to suck on the end and get a mouth full of salty water ... Mm lol , they are under 30$ , I have live sand so it gets messy if I don't touch it for a while .

I agree water flow and clean up crew. I have one pump pointing down (bare bottom) to ensure that any debris stays afloat. usually use a turkey baster on my rocks, turn all pumps off let it settle than syphon out while doing my water change.
