Covering or Removing Sand?

Just wanted to get people's thoughts.....

I have about an inch maybe 1.5" of sand in my FOWLR, but have been debating on putting in something else as some of my fish dust up the tank from time to time.

I don't really want to suck it out (mess), but if I have to I will.  Would there be any harm in covering it up with something different?

It's easy to siphon out, just do a little bit at a time and spread it out over a 3-4weeks and you shouldn't have any issues.

By removing your sandbed, you are removing a significant portion of your biological filtration, so don't move it all at once.

about 12 years ago I removed approx 1/3 of my livesand in an attempt to remove what I thought was a phosphate sink (didn't we have internet back then??), and had a crash so bad it was shocking.  The sand really is doing a LOT of work in a system, removing it (and releasing all the stored nastiness) can really do in a system in no time.  Just fyi.

Thanks for the input guys.  I have done some reading about it but wanted input from more experienced people.

I just get frustrated with my goby and a couple other fish that dust up my tank from time to time.
