thanks, there are a few snails in with them and they didn't seem to bother, they are all still alive..I have never had crabs before so that's why I was asking.. I do have empty shells in the big tank so when I get more I will offer them a choice...

I've saw them line up in a 4-5 crab conga line to snag up the next biggest shell, if there aren't any extras that's when you start to get killings, from my experience anyways:)

I agree with Nonuser. I had a few, 3 varieties of them. They were neat to watch, until I saw them ripping a snail out of his shell. They were immediately relegated to the sump, gone now. I will not replace them.
Too many other cool cuc options out there!

There is so much cuc diversity in my tank, I don't miss the hermits.
I love my red lynkia and long spined urchin. Both have been with me for a year or so. I had originally planned to keep all my tank's glass clean but I am letting the back grow coralline for the urchin and the film algae for the star. Warning, though, my urchin munches on encrusting corals, and not just the coralline. And he's big! But he's so awesome to watch, I'm keeping him.
I bought a couple of different kinds of turbo snails from Unibob a while back. And different colours of my favourite snails, the nassarius.
Limpets, stomatella snails, brittle stars and bristle worms are making a comeback in my tank after losing them when I dosed with flatwormX more than a year ago. (Lesson learned about chemical solutions to issues.)
I'm looking for a sandsifting star next. My diamond watchman goby stirs up the gravel non-stop. But he also eats what I feed my fish, so I know there'll be enough to sustain both types of sand sifters.
There are 4 shrimp in there, too. 2 bloodshrimp who have paired up, a skunk cleaner shrimp who is out all the time and a small peppermint. The blood and cleaner shrimps eat from my hand.

Does anyone have anything else to suggest?

Let's be honest.. No one wants crabs .. Lol
I've had both in a tank and like everyone else said they don't really die on their own , I bought 12 crabs when I started my 20 gallon added them about 5 days after water went in (thinking they would all die lol) all of them lived then bought a holloween hermit and he ate everythin !! Lol I've been crab free for 9 months lol..

Also I've had 3 hermits that use to love to pick and the silicone on the corners in the tank .. sob .. Trying to crash my tank
