Does Anything Like This Exist ....?

First off, I don't know the rate of growth for corals so this may be a dead topic right off the bat.

I see some people selling high end SPS and zoanthids and it appears they are in high demand, however most people don't want to or can't afford $100-$300 per polyp, frag, head, etc.

What if a collection of people got in together and each threw in $10-50 and did a group buy for 1 frag/head/polyp. Someone took the frag and grew it in their tank until it was large enough for everyone else to get a piece of the original coral.

Seems like a decent way (in theory) for people to get corals they typically wouldn't own, just due to the original cost of frags.

I know some guys/gals who did this in Toronto for a encrusting monti frag. I think the original size was 1/4"-1/2" price was around $475 I believe.

I believe frag was lost in the original posters thread...
(even if it wasn't..let's say it did for example sake)

My question is: do the people who pitched in for there 1/8th of the frag get there $$ back?

I for sure would be open to this, however I would be hesitant (depending on who was all in on the frag/polyps) as to who kept the frag.

You would also be surprised as to how hard it can be to get people to actually commit to something like this.

Frags die, Sometimes it takes months or years to get a frag big enough to frag. Then while you're waiting for it to grow you change your mind or get out of the hobby. The frag becomes less valuable or one of you want out and get your portion of the money back.

I think the best way is that hobbyist get what they like they grow it and trade/sell for the love of the hobby or just to recoup a part of what they spend on the the hobby. Have more frequent swap meets or maybe create a aquarium club.

Its a snow ball affect when it comes to getting into higher end corals.

Start off with what you can afford. Once they've grown frag them and sell off what you have. Then buy something a bit more expensive. And it goes on and on.

But like everyone said. Your idea is great in concept. But would never work.

The only way it would work is if a few members went splits on a large colony and fragged it up to split it. But when it comes to frags. It takes too long to grow into fragable size and the risk of a frag dying is far too high for most to invest in and let someone else try and grow it out

well my wolverine might be big enough to frag in 3 years lol ill keep you posted :p most of my high end stuff i traded for, im a broke sob lmao. just buy something you like and when it gets too big frag it. chances are if you liked it someone else will. then put it all as your tank funds till you have enough for something special. i know a few times i traded large colonies for just a frag but was worth it

...and remember this year's $200/inch or polyp is next year's $20/inch or polyp. There's a price collectors are willing to pay to have the newest, rarest pieces, which doesn't necessarily mean the nicest... There are tons of gorgeous corals out there that are not talked about because they are established and more common and therefore affordable.

Agreed. I like to have a couple of the latest and greatest, but for this tank it's a long term project, and I'm putting frags I love in it. Eventually they will grow and be big.

I'm expecting to see some great things in my tank this year. It's set up the way I needed it to be. And there is a ton of flow. So those millepora are going to look like hairy messes in there!
