Ordered 40lbs of black nature's ocean live aragonite sand from amazon. I only bought it because it was the cheapest black sand I could find at $30 for 40lbs. RealIy didn't care about the "live" factor. Figured there was a good chance it would be "expired", and sure enough it is.

So the question is, given it is nearly 2.5 years expired, is it feasible to use, or is it essentially a bag of decaying matter?

That sucks, not even close to being fresh! No wonder it was the cheapest. I'm sure as long as you give it a good rinse you will be fine. Good luck

I have heard in the past that it is no big deal because there will always be some Bacteria left and just to use it the same way, so don't rinse if anything ad some start up Bacteria. Didn't you have trouble with the Black substrate before?

I'd call them and say: "W.T.F. Do you want me to sue you for killing my fish? Send me a new bag at no charge, that isn't expired, and we'll forget this ever happened..." Then you would have 2 bags for the price of 1...

2 1/2 years is ridiculous. Even the shipper could see that tag. That's poor customer service. If it wasn't listed as expired, then they owe you a bag that isn't!

I had trouble while I had black sand in a previous tank (tahitian moon sand), but don't think that was a substrate issue. I've used the moon sand in 2 tanks. One had issues, the other didn't.

I like your style, but if i call and make a fuss there's a chance they'll stop selling any remaining expired stock, and I still need 80lb more! I really don't care if its live or not, if I did I'd be pissed and they'd know about it!

Reduced price or not, You as the customer, has the right to be informed, prior to the sale, if the product is out dated. If I didn't know I was buying expired product, I'd be pissed.
