I'm thinking I may put an External over flow on my tank, Now it might be too much of an under taking but do you think it can be done, Currently its a Corner over flow drilled in the bottom. I'm thinking Coast to Coast.

It can be done fairly easily.  Wish I had went that route.  When I break my tank down tomorrow for the move I may do it.

Are external overflows hard to use or maintain ive heard diffrrent things and have been told to stay away and just get the tank drilled? Ive been debating on what to do with my 75.. buy a new set up or put a external overflow on..the reason for buying new and not getting it drilled is because theres a sticker on the bottom panel of glass saying tempered glass do not drill so im jot sure if its all panels or just the bottom..so i dont wanna risk it..sorry for the hijack jim :p

I think the biggest concern people have with external overflows is just fear of the thought of having the overflow outside of the tank - what if the seal fails, what if the silicone doesn't hold and the overflow falls, etc.

Myself I wish I had gone the external route when I built my tank, but I didn't due to the above fears, being my first tank build I somewhat lacked confidence in my workmanship and design.  But I will definitely be doing one on my next build.

They appear to work great.  There's a couple ways you can put on an external overflow Reefer:
-Get one of the hang on externals (probably the most viable option for you since you have an established tank and want to add a sump)
-Drill holes in the back of the tank, install bulkheads with screens, install overflow box on back and have water enter it via the bulkheads
-Notch out the top of the tank to create a coast to coast weir that empties into the external overflow box (my favourite option and what I will be doing on my next tank.  this is also the method that is implemented on pulpfiction's tank)

What method are you looking at implementing Jewel?

I've had a tank with an external and loved it, It was coast to Coast with 3 drains, Now that tank was a lot bigger than my present tank. I would think that notching the back of the tank would be out of the question right? So if not that, then drill it and put bulk heads in, not sure how many or where? Get the external glass overflow built and attached to the back of the tank and then remove the inside over flow and either cover the 2 holes on the bottom with glass or capped bulk heads and sand over them.

I'd have to MT it but no biggie, just like transferring a tank to tank. What do you think?

I took out my corner flows and plugged the bulkheads, drilled the back for bean animal and added a coast to coast internal overflow.  I think while I have it empty I will take out the coast to coast and notch out where I drilled and put an external overflow on instead. Will save space being able to plumb down instead of out.

Nice idea, I am going to build a frag tank and this idea would be great for my build. Want to keep the tank 48x12x12. External coast to coast would give me all the footprint inside the tank. And the cool look factor would be sweet :)
