I am getting ready to throw this sump together.

I have a 40 Gallon Long 48"x12"x16" tank I am using

1. Should I buy my own glass and try and cut it myself? Glass Cutter

2. What size (thickness) glass should I use?

3. Where is the best place to buy glass in London?

4. If I had someone else cut the glass which glass company in London do you suggest?

For a sump, I just use old tanks, typically old 20 gallons. Use a straight edge and a good glass cutter. YouTube it to get the method down. Might break the first one or 2 pieces while you get the feel. I did use a local glass shop for my overflow though. They charged me $2/cut and I supplied the glass that u marked/planned, 4 cuts later they still only charged me $6.50 or so.

Edwards glass has always been great. They cut it to size. My last order cost around $50 and they even sanded the edges for me. It was for 4 baffles 2/8 thick

I was in there, they said they can get the glass for me and charge some extra to install it.

I am not all that handy, but checking out youtube cutting glass doesn't look that hard.

Since I am not a jack of all trades, I try and do what I can and only want to pay others if I can't do something.

Plus at the end of the day I feel way better when I can look at something and know I build it.

So do you not worry about the baffles leaking past a bit or do you have something special that works glass to acrylic?

Silicone works just fine. A bead on both sides does the trick. Rough acrylic up a bit on edges where it meets glass, then clean and dry well.

not sure if we are getting confused here, I was always told that acrylic/plexi glass won't adhere to glass...

You wouldn't be able to use silicone to build an acrylic tank, but you can use silicone to hold baffles in. Nice thing is if you ever do need to remove it, a good tug up will pull acrylic baffle out. (Not possible with glass)

Can I get some plexiglass at Home Depot or is there some other secret place I don't know about?

OR ........

Should I just use glass?

I assume plexi is much easier to work with

You can cut with a knife and keep sorring it and crack it you will want the thick one so it doesn't bow but if you use a power saw get a fine blade and put tape down where your cutting and run the saw blade thru centre of tape
