Ditching the bio pellets and giving Nitra Guard bio cubes a go. I always do a 10 gallon weekly water change with RO/DI water and have been running bio pellets for sometime now and my nitrates have always been detectable. They have never been too high at the highest they where at 10 ppm but have usually stuck around 5ppm. So I figured I would try these. I am doing my weekly water change tonight and have to soak bio cubes in RO/DI water for 24 hrs. I will check nitrates tomorrow just before adding and post results. Then again in a couple of weeks will post results again as they claim that you will see a drop in 1 to 2 weeks so we shall see

After soaking for 24hrs like the manufacturer said I put the bio cubes on the mesh media bag suppied and put and airstone right in the middle of the bio cubes. This is what the manufacturer calls the bomb method. Threw it into sump close to the intake of my skimmer. Nitrates measured 10 ppm. So I will check nitrates again in a week to see if there is any drop.

Ok thank you Jerry for this info. Also do you know if I am suppose to keep my Alk around 7 to 8 dhK like you are with bio pellets?

I don't think there is a specific level that you need to keep your alkalinity at.. They do work really well and it helps with your water changes and not having to do them weekly

I'm going to be trying Nitra Guard as well DerekL. I have them soaking since last night and will put them in my sump tonite. My Nitrates however are much higher (160ppm+) and I'm using 2 kits at once. I don't have air stones yet but will run an air hose in each bomb until I can pic a couple stones up. I just want to get this rolling.

Eric I got mine from a lfs here in windsor. I paid $30 for the 500ml jar of them. I have emailed orca labs asking about the alk. JRoovers was the one who mentioned to me about the alk level and bio pellets as I was usin Red Sea coral pro salt with high alk and my sps tips where looking bleached. Once I got my alk levels down to 8 dhK things started looking better. I will post the reply if and once I receive one so others will know.

I have been doing a lot of reading over at MASA and it seems there are quite a few ppl in South Africa using these so I joined that forum and so far it seems that using these alk should be kept under 10dhk. So it was suggested to me that I leave mine at 8dhk as I have it stable there.
