I think one compliments the other. Correct me if I'm wrong, but your canister runs chemical and mechanical filtration to remove detritus and "buff" your water. The fuge will assist in removing nitrates and phosphates and give a sanctuary for pods to grow. I had a CPR HOB fuge on my prior system. It was a cosmetically beautiful fuge and I could watch pods crawling in and around the macro. Like all things though I upgraded to a larger fuge and the HOB now collects dust in my attic. I personally think you should run both.

I was quite impressed with CPR. Build quality was great, made from thick acrylic and it was topped with a quality CFL lamp.
I would sell you mine (after making sure I had all the parts that is), but I realize we're not exactly close to each other.

If your not happy with the canister filter and you want a fuge you might as well go for a sump setup. I'm sure you could grab a used small tank and pump fairly cheap. The light spectrum needed for the macro to do a sufficient job will cause gha issues in your tank unless you keep the light blocked from the tank. I tried an hob fuge before but found it created more problems then it solved.

Best choice would be plop some mangroves right in the tank but still have the light spectrum issue.
