So I know the type of filtration you need for a tank with corals and fish , but what about just coral on its own ? In a tank by itself ?
Is it true that you don't really need sand rock or even a sump , just a wee skimmer or hob filter ? Can anyone clear this up for me lol

Well I think it depends on what you want to grow. Coral doesn't have a large bioload, so if you wanted to do softies I would say no skimmer, but if you were doing sps I would buy a shitty one. I don't think there's need for a sump, rock or sand. Just do some egg crate. Not 100% sure, just my 2 cents.

I dont know what the pros would say but here is a brief description of my frag tank set up.
I did build this myself and so far....my frags
( sps, lps, zoas and mushrooms ) all seem to be doing very well in it.

30"x12"x10" tank
50/50 LEDS
Hydor pwr head
Egg crate on bottom (tried it without but the frags kept sliding all around on the glass Lol)
CTC overflow with bean animal drains and a 3/4" return.
20 gal, 3 chamber sump with just live rock and macro ( chaeto and caulupra ).
And one hob filter with reef carbon and a bit of nitrate sponge.
I also agree with Little Reef keeper, not a big bio load but I am about to put on a small skimmer and, I also intend to run a small but full blown fuge on it. I mean, cant hurt, right?

I hope this helps you Luke!

It dose 100% but I just didn't want to go all out on this just simple simple simple , maybe a hob filter or some kind of skimmer, a power head and a kessil led on it I doubt I'll do any "hard to keep" stuff . Let me know if I'd run into issues before I get started lol..

FWIW. Right at the moment, with my systems under construction, my frag tank consists of a 30ish gallon short tank 2/3 filled, with a hydor powerhead, a chunk of old live rock, 8 Cree led's sadly under-driven by a spare driver I had around (it needs more light really) and a few frag racks. All quickly thrown together...

It has been running for several months and other than a few initial problems due to my neglect (not used to how much attention a system less than 250gal requires lol) I am getting nice growth on Acros and Montis, chalice are 50/50 happy or not same with Z&P (too clean, not feeding enough IMO) so it can be done very minimally.
