Is this carbon OK?

I never thought about this but I notice many of you use BRS Rox carbon. I have been using Fluvanna carbon from my fresh water days (I had a huge left over tub) is this stuff OK?

It's just a thought but is there any difference in this stuff? I always thought carbon was carbon.....

this is what i used when i had a heater shatter. i rushed to petsmart and it was all they had. ..i have the brs carbon now ..this fluval needs a real good washout ..takes forever to get clear b4 yu use it ..the best way and easist way to get media dry clean is to put the dry media in the reactor yur goin to use ...fulling a reactor with wet media is a pain in the ass....so full the reactor with dry and take yur output hose out and stick in a 5 gallon pail and run yur tank water thru it if yur gonna do a watercange ..but if not use rodi water. till the water from output is clear...or are yu gonna run the carbon in a bag and sit in a high flow area ?

I clean it and rinse it just like I do with my GFO, it does take a good amount of time but it gets there eventually.

I use this in my TLF 550 reactor.

I was just making sure that this carbon was no different than say BRS carbon or any other marine carbons you guys use.

I should mention that you should rinse GFO only in RO/DI water, or water directly from the tank, or really you're using up some of the media on tapwater.  I usually put the gfo (and carbon) in the containers, and then fill it with RO/DI and let it all saturate, then I run tank water through it (into a bucket) until it's clear.  At least then it's pulling some crap out of the tank while it washes :)

Is there a difference? I rinse it with regular water till its clear.

I place a mj 1200 into a bucket that is under the bathtub faucet as it is running, and I hang the reactor on the side of the bucket and it does its thing for 10 - 15 min till it runs clear.

*Shrug*

I do this with my GFO as well. Makes a mess in the tub but that is easily cleaned out afterwards and it is a no brainer.

if yu think about it.    that reaactor still is full of tap water when yur done rinsing it    so that s why. use rodi water  that way yu can still use the reactor back into  sump.  just like adding more rodi top off water

You asked 6 months ago if this was OK... Everyone said it wasn't iirc

Yes your carbon is being used up removing chlorine from that water you're running through it

Hmmm... Could that be a real issue? London tap water isn't horrible, but could it be seriously depleting the life of said carbon or GFO before it hits my tank?

Worst case scenario, it is just using up some of the "life span" of said carbon and GFO but it isn't actually BAD for the tank is it?

Terrible long term memory. But I don't recall asking about the actual carbon I was using. I think at that time we just discussed rinsing methods.

[/quote] That's exactly what I'm talking about, rinsing with tap water wasn't a good idea back then either.. My memory sucks too, but out of everyone go replied.. No one used tap water but you.. Many said you shouldn't too.

Ok dude. Your point has been made crystal clear.

This thread was about the TYPE of carbon. You make it sound like I made a replicated thread about HOW to rinse carbon. You are the one blowing this up dude. Lol. (even though I am pretty sure my comments about rinsing carbon back then wasn't a specific thread created by me but a side note to a discussion that came up in a separate topic....)

Bra has a couple really good videos discussing the differences between different carbons.  You should check them out.
