Eels have one of the most fascinating life cycles. We don't know exactly where they spawn, but it is thought to be somewhere in the Sargasso Sea.
From there they swim for years, developing into these glass eels you see on the picture. An European eel would arrive roughly three years later to the European mainland.
Here they swim up rivers, adapting to fresh water and turning yellow. They not only adapt to swimming and living in fresh water, they also slither across land through wet grass or sand, to find lakes to settle in.
Once they find a good freshwater source, they live the majority of their lives there, usually 5-20 years. After that, they reach sexual maturity and metamorphose again, into silver eels. As such, they slither back to the river, and then travel for years again back to the spawning grounds somewhere in the Sargasso Sea.
