So a question for you led'ers.... Based on your LEDs on your tank and how bright the white actually is how many LEDs would you think I would need to replace 2 250 watt halides. They have a 120 led kit now I was thinking of getting. 60/60. I already have 36 blues so I would have 156 LEDs total.

For the whites mix em up, 2 to 1 neutral white to cool white. Hyper red 660 nm, not the basic red most carry is getting grear reviews as well. Add some true violet for that super actinic pop

Neutral white being 6500k? And cool being 10k? Or vice versa. Does ray carry the hyper red? Also I would think adding a couple off colours such as red ad violet would give a rather spot light effect. They would have to be rather spread out to evenly distribute throughout my six footer. This is why I'm still using halide, every time I think I'm ready I can't make up my mind on colours and how many of each.

the off colors u cluster with your regular colors but given ur current linear setup it may not work as nicely.

Neutral white is more of a 4500 kelvin and cool white us 6700 kelvin
I belueve ray also has a full spectrum white led in the 14000 k range now as well
Its what orphek uses as their primary white source. Neutral white will bring out yhe yellows and oranges and reds. Cool white helps boost the neutral white so its yellow.

If ur up for it build led pendents/clusters vs. Linear runs. If anything naybe di a small test and see how u like the color blending of a cluster array. Up yp onviously but if u have some time u might be pleased with results.

Here's what I had in mind.  The only reason I built the linear run was just for actinic supplement to my halides. This time I was thinking of three clusters on heat sinks suspended over each section of my dt. 120 led package with the following LEDs:

6-6500k
6-4500k
48-10k
------------
12-u violet
48-rb

Now each cluster would house 40 LEDs x 3

Just having a hard time figuring out the layout as each pendant would have 4 uv, 2 45k, 2 65k, 16 10k, 16 rb

Maybe this?

10-rb-10-rb-10-rb-10-rb-10-rb
10-rb-10-45-uv-uv-65-rb-10-rb
10-rb-10-65-uv-uv-45-rb-10-rb
10-rb-10-rb-10-rb-10-rb-10-rb

I think I like this..

Ok phi where is this hyper red led u are talking about. Thinking about incorporating the reds in. 2 per pendant.  I figure with all three variations of whites, blues and uv, might as well incorporate the red too! Chime in with my setup... Where should I put the reds?

so i went back to the LED thread i follow regularly on nano-reef. The guy who makes those 13-up boards uses a pretty crazy mix but gets some great colors.

he uses a board like this

6738433607_a176f1ba3a.jpg

and when he wasnt using those boards he was mixing single board diodes for the same mix. I would suggest doing the same.  Build led clusters in the same ratio - now he's bringing back the regular blues into the mix as well but isnt getting that windex look as you can see. I also had the whites ratio way off - here's his magic mix...

so per pendant/cluster;

5 royal blue
2 regular blue
1 deep red (660nm)
2 neutral white
3 cool white
2 true violet

its seems like a lot of colors but it really isnt. the blues blend into one another (along with the TV) and the whites do the same. only the red is weird color in the mix. You want the LEDS as close together as possible, like almost touching close.

deep red is here http://www.ledgroupbuy.com/deep-red-660nm-2-pack-1-99ea/ - that guy sells the bridgelux leds if you want to price it out from him.

if you build the light and think the color blending just isnt as nice as you would like it you can get some of this special blending film from the guy makes that 13up board. Its expensive but he gets not color banding issues.

I find I can get really good POP from most things in the tank with just the royal blues alone.  I've been looking into cyan, red and violet.  Anyone have any luck with any of those in particular?  I'm thinking I'm going to do up a dimmable accent strip with a mix of those, just perusing the LEDgroupbuy site.  They have a lot of colours...

Wow he doesn't even use a 10k led?!? Damn. So maybe do a blend of 10k, 6500k and 4500 k with royal blues

Got tired of debating so I pulled the trigger. 120 LEDs. 48 rb, 12 actinic 420nm, 30 10k, 30 4500k.

Giving me a total of 84 royal blues and 12 actinics so 96 blues all together and 60 whites. Not quite a 2:1 ratio but I can always dim down the whites and ramp the blues to achieve that colour I like. Later on I'll play around with diff colours like the reds.
