This is a basic break down and I have not covered everything on the different types of filtration on a reef tank. If you want to properly learn how to maintain a reef tank, I would do some reading on nutrient cycling. It will teach you how to curb algae blooms and go a long way towards maintaining a healthy reef. People tend to skip the basics and try to rely on the toys to keep a reef without truly understanding what is really going on in it.
Thank you very much for your input. I have done lots of reading when getting into reef keeping and agree you must always prepare properly when starting any new project. Luckily I have never had any blooms of hair algae or cyano in my tank. I do however have red bubble algae that has taken off but I'm hoping my Emerald crab can help me with this. My phosphate and nitrate problem began with my water source originally and was compounded with the foods I must feed my tank. Compared to seahorse keeping, a reef tank is so much more involved and complicated and, sadly it was neglected for a bit while I looked after all my little seahorse babies. Now that I don't need to worry about my babies as much I can spend a little more time getting to my reef tank.
