Picked up a 10-11 inch snowflake eel tonight...such a cool looking guy...within a hour of being dripped (for 90 mins) he was eating krill I dropped in. Hes in my fish only system now and as cool as i think he would be in my reef i dont think ill risk it and leave it in the fowlr. Ill post a pic tomorrow

Anyone else have experience with these eels?

Our eel is doing well and is now approximately 1 1/4" in diameter and at least 18 - 20" long. He has slowed down his eating at the moment but looks healthy. We have been lucky in that it doesn't seem to be interested in our shrimp or smaller fish that are in there. Dave feeds it a variety of foods including frozen Clam, Squid, Octopus, Shrimp and Silversides. He buys a seafood medley mix at the grocery store and it seems to enjoy it.

At that size i wouldn't worry. They're not poisonous, and will only bite if they mistake your hand for food (they're essentially blind). My zebra eel is nearly 3ft long, and after seeing what he can do to clams, I have no intention of ever hand feeding him!

I have also found seafood medley to be a good way to vary their diet, along with whole clams. Have you ever seen your shrimp clean the eel's mouth? It's kind of odd to see! My blood shrimp essentially lives on my eel's back. I think everyone who owns an eel should take a chance and get some type of cleaner shrimp as well.

Very true about active=hungry. The only time mine cruises around the tank is when he hasn't been fed in a few days. Once he's fed he goes back to his "den". Kinda wish it were the other way around, but can't change nature!

No I haven't seen that yet but it would be amazing!

will these guys bite if my hands are in the tank and if so is the bit poisonous or nothing to worry about?

Dave feeds with long tongs. It is really cool to watch the eel come up and take the food then take it down to wrestle with it. That's when we really get a sense of how big it has grown since it spends most of it's time hidden in the tubes we made for it.

If that happened to me I'd probably jump so far the poor eel would end up on the carpet! I'm glad Dave does all the feeding :)
