my sump has no real odor, now when i open my skimmer................different story

Same here. No smell at all till skimmer lid comes off. Then it reaks pretty bad.... Also have two reactors with no dosing. Maybe you need a bit of air circulation down there?

Mine also smells a bit icky sometimes Peter.  Kind of like the Thames in its dirty spots.  Sometimes worse than other times - it notably smelled after I had the heat wave casualties last month.  How are your nutrient levels?  I have found that if the sump smells my nitrates are probly high (have measured them at up to and ovet 40ppm in the past couple of months).

My sump area has no smell but like the others the cup smells bad when I empty the skimmer.  However, my sump is in a separate room and not under the tank so I don't know if that makes a difference.  My other sump is under the tank and also doesn't smell but I haven't put the doors on my cabinet yet.

This is a problem.

No smell to my sump either but it is in an open area. Open skimmer is enough to melt your eyes. I can only clean it when the wife is out of the house. lol. Doesn't bother me anymore... I'm immune to the odour.

No smell to either sump and the skimmer smell goes with the pellets or other carbon dosing.  The 200 gal fish and softies tank runs nitrates well above 100ppm and the skimmer produces dark black skimmate that has far less odor than the yellow/tan stuff that the 180gal reef produces on carbon.

I am running socks now and it has not affected the odor at all.  I am trying more mechanical filtration as part of my ongoing war with nitrates.  I do clean the socks every few days, so nothing sits in them and rots..

No socks for me. Too much effort to constantly clean them. I do clean my sump every 6 months though along with my pump and skimmer.
