Rock Scaping Question

Going to be setting the display back up - rockscaping may even start tonight.

I was considering making a little PVC pipe shelf at the back of the tank - maybe 3 or 4" - to sit the rock on. Would be more rock in from to cover the pipe.

I realized when I pulled the rock out how much was under the sand - wanting to be more efficient with my large pretty pieces.

Has anyone ever done this?

I have seen threads on reefcentral from people who have done this. Some used pvc, some used eggcrate. They say it helped make rock work secure if you have sandsifting gobies or starfish.
