do snails only live off algae?      i have qiut a bit that are dead and the live ones are eating the insides of dead ones

depends on the snails, the nassarius snails will eat dead snails, left over food, waste. etc etc They are the ones that pop outta the sand when you feed your tank and have that single antenna thingy.

I think it's his protective shell, in which he can open and close at will to protect it's self from predator's.

he might be stuck between the glass and coral.

each snail has different taste for food, mexican's love algae and will die if you have too many mexican's and not enough algae

while cerith snails like slime algae, diatom's and detritus, sometimes rotting flesh. Nassarius like detritus and really love rotting flesh, not so much algae eater's.
