depending what's in there, I do mine when I do a water change and clean my skimmer... if you are going to clean it make sure that you turn your return pump off, you don't want that going into your dt...

I use my shopvac, I cut a hole in a 5 gal bucket lid large enough for the shopvac hose and a second hole large enough for a 1/2" hose and turn everything off and vacuum the sump bottom into the 5 gal bucket, just got to watch you don't overfill the bucket.

I use the bucket to catch the water and smeg so it doesn't go into the shopvac, salt water hard on everything and I don't want to corrode the motor in my shopvac.

So your shopvac is hooked to the bucket, and a second hose goes from the bucket to the bottom of the sump? I've heard of collecting drywall dust like this....

yes pretty much but I use a 1/2" hose to vac the sump so I don't draw as much water and choke it, plus it gives more time to vac.
