Was thinking of going led. But my tank is doing so well. I don't want oo mess with it right now.
I am currently running 5 blue plus, 1 purple, and 2 coral plus ati bulbs. I'm thinking of going 2 coral plus, 2 blue plus, 2 actinic and 2 purple.
Any thoaughts, will the tank look much differant. Thaought i might get better colour this way.

There's nothing wrong with T-5, I've tried them all and MH is number 1 for sure but T-5 is a close second in my opinion, LED will cut down on the cost but I don't think the LED lights have the colour spectrum. The blues are good but not the whites, I think your choice of bulbs is very good, I'm going to be switching out a couple of my blues for purples.

If u have the right led fixture the colours are just as good as anything else. I have five hydras only running four currently and would never go back. Had halide and t5 and leds are my fav by far. That said the colour choice u have would be pretty good maybe too much purple though hard to say.

IMO the hydras are at the top of the game as far as spectrum wise for the $$$. You are getting a full spectrum LED for $400 which has UV too.

As far as T5, I find you will get the best "uniform" growth on corals from MH/T5, the coverage is unbeatable. One thing I have noticed about LED and sps directly together is that coral has almost "bare" spots from possibly a shadowing effect/just not full coverage on the coral. You don't notice this as much until the coral is out of the water, it just doesn't seem as full of polyps as something that came from MH or T5.
Colour wise on the coral...I think LED are for sure there now with the spectrum to keep coral colours.

I would run 4 blue plus minimum in your fixture, the purple is nice, but 1 purple bulb is plenty. I would stick with 5 blue, 2 coral plus and 1 purple plus or maybe swap a blue for another coral plus.. I like a blue look though, awesome for colours and still get decent growth.

I know most frag farmers grow under 6500K-10K just because the growth is so much quicker at this spectrum
this is my opinion from experience.

Thanks Jerry. I like the bluer look too. But thought about adding a couple actinic instead of blue plus and maybe get more color.
Not sure if it would work though. I probably should buy exactly what i have, I get great growth and everything is happy
Might add some led;'s too supplement for color pop. But not sure yet.

yu can go to kees and get the reefbrite XHO strips.

The xho's have very little ' pop' to them though
Get a rb or rig a DIY strip of rb's
[/quote]

They are royal blue leds in the xho, they look identical to a diy rb setup..  .. Just make sure u get a blue one and not a 50/50
