Bailed me right out of my skimmer dillema.  Top notch.  Next time, you'll have to stay for a couple of beers.  ;D

I've been skimmerless and freaking out since Mon or Tues of this week.  I've ordered a reef octopus from BRS but it might not get here until wed or thurs, which would be more than a week, and my substrate and glass was growing algae and all the softies were closed up and stressed (I think that might have been from the change in oxygen levels).  He was in town and sold me one of his SWC cones.  It was foaming skimmate within ten minutes of him leaving, making me a happy Zakk.

I really thought he was fat.  Who nicknames themselves BLOB?  ;D

I got the 160 cone.  It has the same pump that I detest, but it's pretty efficient at pulling scum out of the water column, I was out at a hockey game from 8-1am and when I came back, I have probably 2 inches of thick green crap in the cup.  I'm not surprised since it was 5 days without a skimmer, but I was happy to see it.

I bougt that one for $179 in the bulk buy, it will be interesting to see which one ends up as my main skimmer for now.  I'm just thrilled to not have an expensive reef system running without a skimmer.  I would highly recommend to everyone here that they have a backup of some sort for their skimmer.  It's murder when you have to do without it!!!

Interesting find.  When the skimmer went down for good on Jan 17th, I see that not only did ORP take a big stroll upwards, but so did PH.  Not huge, but I never hit 8.4 during the day normally.

I only usually use the ORP reading as a reminder to do water changes.  The huge drops are 15GAL water changes.  Looks like the one I did last night wasn't quite big enough (which is right, I only did a 10GAL change).

New skimmer showed up today  ;D

Says it takes 3-4 weeks to break in, so I'll run it on a tub of dirty tank water for a couple of weeks before trying it in the main tank. Gotta love when new hardware shows up.

Ok now I'm trying to wrap my head around that graph as I've never really thought about orp. Is that the amount of oxygen in the water? If so according to that graph it actually increased due tithe skimmer, but when you did a water change it reduced the amount of o2 in the water? This takes me back to the earlier question someone posted about keeping the water moving for o2.  I have 15 gallons of ato ro water at all times in a air tight bucket that sits dormant for topping up my sump. Makes me nervous now knowing thatbim actually introducing oxygen deprived water.  Not that the 1 or less gals a day probably impact the 160 gallons I have with plenty of surface agitation and my skimmer, but what is everyone else doing? Very interesting graph

Don't think orp is a measure of oxygen in the water but a measure of the oxidation reduction porential. I am on the iPhone so you can google it since I am not typing essay

I'm going to say that I don't understand ORP at all, and I read about 10 articles on it.  All I know is that it should be between 200 and 500, and when you do a water change with nice clean water, it drops.  My next change will be with heavily oxygenated water, it will be interesting to see if ORP drops as much.

With all this I have been tempted to get a dissolved oxygen sensor, but damn they asspensive.

I did another water change, and it sure does do something to the water.  15 gallons out of say 150 and there is a marked change when the new water hits the system.

I look back into my logbook, and when I started 'fixing' the system, ORP remained around 340.  Only in the last month or so it has dropped below 300 and sort of stayed there.  I don't know if there is a correlation to water quality and ORP or not. Seems to be.

I'm not one of those guys that thinks ORP should be controlled, it's just another interesting piece of the puzzle.  Generally, when PH rises, ORP drops, and when PH drops, ORP rises.  But on the chart, a huge drop in ORP at a water change doesn't result in a huge spike in PH.

throw some peroxide into the tank if you want to see a spike :)

I did when I was battling dinos, and yeah I do seem to recall it showed up on the ORP meter pretty much instantly, even a very tiny amount :)
