I would use all new sand. Maybe a scoop of your old sand just to get some of the bacteria transfered to the new sand. If you are using the same rock, then I would just move everything over in one shot. If you are adding more liverock, then you are going to have to take it slower as there will be a cycle. If you are only adding dry rock, along with your existing rock, then you can do it all in one shot as well. Have fun and let us know how it turns out for you. My transfer begins in 2 weeks.

all new sand or you will have huge issues . I would replace 30% of the water aswell with fresh mixed saltwater because when you start taking the old tank down that water will be cloudy as hell adding 30% new gives you that little bit of clean water

If your going to use your old sand rinse it very well before you use it again .. IMO buying new sand is the best way to go you could add a bit of your old stuff to seed the new stuff but I wouldnt use a whole layer of it unless you rinsed it of course . your levels will sky rocket if you use the old sand in the new tank with out being rinsed reallly good .

When I was transferring the fish from my Seahorse tank to the reef tank, I rinsed the old sand very well, put the new sand on top and sent the whole tank through a full cycle before adding the fish.  So far, I have had no problems but I had very few fish to transfer so kept them in a 10 gal while waiting for the cycle.

just like using new sand, even moving just rock.there are biological implications  that can arise from a mass move such as that.then stir up the sand  with all your livestalk in there you're just asking for more problems ,but that's just my own honest opinion

if i had read this when i transfered from my 135 to my 180 i wouldve done things differently... lol

i straight up just moved EVERYTHING over... all the rock, water fish, substrate... i did add one new bag of substrate (crushed coral)
but when i was all said and done, and after the water cleared up a day later... everything was fine and alive... with the lone exception of a cleaner shrimp

I think rinsing out the sand thoroughly and adding new sand is the best idea for saving money. Ideally it is better to just use one grade of sand, oolitic Sand and aragonite sand are used for two different purposes. You may find that you will save a lot of headaches down the road if you buy more of the coarse grade, and just use all new sand.

Did the transfer in one fell swoop. Took all rock and corals and fish out but them in separate 5 gallon pails and the rest of water in a 32 gallon garbage pail and pulled the old tank out and put the new tank in that spot  with new bag of sand and filled it back up agin and all rock and coral and fish in ..but had a hang on back aqua clear filter going to clean up the water
