depends.  Ball valves are cheaper and faster to turn off and on but if you want to precisely adjust the water flow through the valve gate valves are better.  Gate valves are harder to find in 1" and up sizes too.  Personally I have never found the need to buy a gate valve.....

what is it for?

ive always used ball valves , duke princess auto sells ball valves ...

I get stuff at cost at home hardware and they don't have ball valves that's why I ask. But I stoped at rona and threaded balls are 4.80 and non threaded at 12!!

If there is a Lowes near you, go there. A lot cheaper than that. Gate valves are good for skimmers or if you are running a Bean Animal overflow setup for fine tuning your flow. I had to order my 1 1/2" PVC gate valve in. They are not cheap! Talking $50 for one.
