How long you keep using your spare water storage pails ? Having trouble with my SPS and thinking it might be my brute container that’s about five or six years old or my empty extra storage barrel that’s probably six years old. anybody else suffer any issues with their water change equipment ?

I've never had any issues before.

But I have read two things about rodi water storage before that may shed some light.

I've heard long term storage in brute containers may leach some po4 into the water being stored. Not sure if this is true or not as I've never used a brute for long term storage. You may want to test the rodi water that is being stored in this container.

I have also read(over on R2R iirc) that since rodi water is basically clean pure water with no chlorine or chlorimines in it. That it is easy to contaminate. Either through the method you use to remove water from it or contaminated by other means. Some have said they drain their rodi storage containers every 6 months to a year to disinfect the container, rinse and begin use again.

Might be worth looking into. I've personally have never experienced anything like either of these before. But I have read of others having these problems in the past.

I use Brute cans and do not seem to have any issues, mind you, it has only been a year and a half. I definitely get a ton of film buildup on the sides of the cans after about 6 months or so (using IO reef crystals), and just drain and wipe clean with some vinegar. I don't let saltwater sit in the cans for much more than a day or two before a water change, except for the 5 or so gallons leftover in the bottom afterwards.

I had a blue brute container I used for makeup water, and yes indeed they can leech phosphate, and LOTS of it. I ended up finding white 'food grade' tubs, but they ended up discolouring over time and just looking nasty. I then went with a food grade olive(?) barrel and periodically test for phosphate in the RO/DI water in there. There was a huge thread on it at one time, but might have been on reef central (but maybe fragtank?) that some brute tubs seemed to leech, and some did not. My phosphate was reading something like 25.00 ppm after sitting in that tub for a couple of days. I do seem to recall it was also delaminating though...
