ive held fish out of the water for a pic and hook pulling alot longer than that and they swim away just fine
ya, but they just were pulled from their natural habitat and put right back in. they were not caught using cyanide then bagged 3 days ago and shipped from Australia then sat at the toronto airport for half the day then driven to the store and finally after the store employee had a smoke break she grabs it out of the bag with nicotine stained fingers and snaps a pic with an iphone and then put it in an over stocked tank with several other species that have never or should never be in the same environment.

But, I guess its about the same ;)

For the most part (other than the illegal smugglers) collecting wild species is now highly regulated and it takes alot of expensive permits. Most major suppliers use large scale breeders and net raised species for alot more sales than you would think. In most places cyanide is banned for use completely and even the amount, area, and time of year to collect is strictly regulated and monitored. Other than the poorest of countries collecting wild fish for sale is worse of an offense than drugs. Look into the regs for hawaii fish collection and export its no joke and only a handful of people are aloud to do it.

For the fish their slime coat will protect them and if its that unhealthy that it cant it will probably be dead in a few days anyway.

If you feel that strongly about it then why do you want fish yourself?

I just don't like handling them out of water and feel weird when pictures are posted. Hey I've had my share of fish out of water, stripping mouthbrooders. But I feel the practise of taking pictures of fish out of the water not necessary.
But I have fished with my son when he was little and we took a few.

i keep fish because I'm allergic to 99% of all other pets.
