Just had to throw out a celebratory WOOHOO!!!! After he was added, my mandarin was suddenly hiding in one corner behind a hammer (luckily at the front so I noticed) - took awhile to witness but it was definitely the 6-line beating on him.
I just left a net in the tank for a few days (I manned it every so often, with no luck) - finally put a bit of food in the net and got him to come close enough for a swoop. A good thing it worked too - the LFS wanted $10 PER DAY to borrow a fish trap.
