Ya, they seem too want too grow out insted of up.
But i wonder if there too high in the tank. There is only about 7inches of water above them then 4 inches above the water is 8 bulbs of t5 light.
Maybe they need too be a little lower.
I wish that brown algae would dye off. It is slowing down finally.
