Tank Drilling

The topic of drilling came up again and it got me thinking, has anyone actually cracked a tank while drilling? Seems anyone who hasn't drilled a tank is convinced it's a difficult and delicate thing to do. So how many tanks have people drilled, and how many have been cracked/ruined by doing so? Attempts at tempered glass don't count :)

Tanks drilled - 3
Tanks cracked/ruined - 0

Come on, i know a bunch of you have drilled tanks! Let's see some more numbers. Might encourage more people who want a drilled tank to do it :)

Scared from others experiences - never seems to end well but maybe these Toronto folks don't know what they are doing
Sounds like my friends in SW Ontario have a good Success average

So I have been drilling this afternoon.

1st hole went perfect

2nd hole was perfect

3rd hole not so perfect. I have some chipping on the OUTSIDE of the glass. For whatever reason the hole saw bit and caused some chipping on the outside of the hole. Most of the chip is covered by the bulkhead. Problem or no problem?

4th hole is almost done I just ran out of juice on my drill batteries.

Chips aren't end of world as long as the bulkhead seals on inside. You will be the only one who would know looking at it.

CONGRATULATIONS...If you are a little worried use some silicone where the chips are, I believe that you are suppose to put a ring of silicone around the bulkhead anyway.. I did on my 75 gal...

20 holes (Dart frog tanks, drains, misting nozzles and waterfalls)
1 crack, I dropped the drill on the glass.

One trick I've use is to start the hole on the inside first drill about 1mm then go to out side and finish it off.

This is the chip, on the outside of the tank.

I could try and fill it with epoxy, someone on reef central did that with a chip. I just don't want it to weaken the glass and cause a crack if there is something I can do now that would solve the problem. If it's a problem.
