The new 120g setup

I guess it’s about time to update what I’m running!!!

I went from a 60 gallon reef setup with no sump when I was living in an apartment to a 75 gallon that was temporary as we moved into the new house. If anyone had been to IA to see Bill you might remember the 120gallon tank with the cherry wood stand that he had for awhile. After wanting it for a long time I finally made the purchase back in February and it was held in Neo’s basement for a couple months (thanks Dave)  :D until we got the keys to the new place.

I set the tank up in my garage to ensure there were no leaks in it or the plumbing as it was used and it had been awhile since the overflows had seen water. I was originally going to do a basement sump but the wife didn’t like that idea to much so I caved. I have plans to change it to a basement sump now because I am losing my mind with trying to fit everything under the stand and doing maintenance. The wife is now on board especially after spilling some top off water on her clean floor LOL ...OOPS  ::).  So I am now in the planning stages of that happening. I’m looking at setting up a frag tank inline or maybe I will leave that for another day not really sure.
I made the final move to the living room and the transition from the 75g to the 120g was done in a day.

Equipment:

120g reef ready setup with herbie overflows
Water blaster 5000 return pump
Aqua Illuminations SOL LED lighting

Fennex titanium 500w heater

It's funny, that 120 was in his 'shop' FOREVER.  If he had just put some water and a light into it and cleaned it up, he would have sold it in a week.  I never understood that.

Looks wonderful.  I don't blame you for wanting the sump in the basement.  They are so hard to reach under a cabinet.  No room for new toys in the future!  ;)

Very nice.

I will suggest one thing.

You remove the 500w heater and get yourself x2 250w or x2 300w heaters.  I would never just half one heater on such a large system, they do break and it is a lifeline to your system.

I know it sucks to swap out something you already have, but maybe adding a second heater as a backup.  Pretty easy to add one on.  Most guys with tank controllers use two heaters "just in case".

Absolutely.  Your second heater could be programmed to only turn on if your tank falls below the threshold you set for your main heater.

I am gone for two weeks every month and my system is completely automated, but it is only as good as the backup plans you have in place.
