Here is a short list of the best reef fish, it's a great start on your stocking list.

#1 Yellow Coris wrasse (halichoesres chrysus)
This is an all around great fish to have in your reef aquarium, they help control flat worms and other pests. They also are known a social fish, meaning they will help bring out shy fish into the open. They do need at least 2 inches of sand, due to sleeping under the sand at night or scared.
Cautions: Need a lid or netting they will jump.

#2 Ocellaris and Percula clownfish.
They work great in pairs and are very disease resistant. They are fun to watch and fairly sociable. Do not add more than 2 per aquarium unless you have a very big system.
Caution: might host an lps and cause damage.

#3Banggai Cardinal
This fish is very mellow during the day, if your lucky to get a pair they will breed in captivity. (must be a male and female) they are funny looking fish that people will notice.
Caution: They are nocturnal and will only eat frozen meat like squid, clam and shrimp. I have never observed them eating flakes or pellets.

#4 Foxface rabbitfish
This fish is a great algae eater and known to survive tank "wipe outs" these fish are very forgiving. They also come in various shades and colours.
Caution: They have a venomous spine fin.

#5 Yellow shrimp goby
These goby's will also mate up in captivity. They are very comical at times and fun to watch. They are also very durable fish. If you can get a pair with a pistol shrimp it's a nice addition to the community tank.
Caution: they do dig so be sure the rock work is stable. They are also known to jump.

#6 Purple firefish
These fish are very beautiful, disease resistant and acclimates easily.
Caution: they will jump and also need many hiding spots - will sometimes burrow into the sand. Will not do well with aggressive eaters.

#7 Kole's tang / goldring bristletooth (ctenochaetus strigosus)
This tang will acclimate to an aquarium with out much fuss. They will clean up algae and still want more. This fish is not territorial and will get along with tank mates (other than close relatives)
Caution: Their color fades to a muted brown as they age.

#8 Jeweled rockskipper (lawnmower blenny)
Great utility fish that will leave kiss prints on your glass. Will ignore tankmates and eat all day long.
Caution: Will sometimes starve if not enough food is available - most will eat nori, flakes and pellets.

#9 Longnose hawkfish
Fascinating fish for the reef aquarium and will eat bristle worms. sometimes can become a bully to small elongated fish.
Caution: can eat ornamental shrimp if hungry.

#10 royal gramma
A colorful disease resistant fish with a ton of personality, it will become territorial of it's sleeping spot but not a bully. Should be supplied with a cave or overhang.
Caution: Can jump

The Longnosed Hawkfish is a beautiful specimen but they do like to jump, A little pricey unless you can get one from an unsuspecting store who doesn't know their fish. I bought one at Als in Hamilton for 20 but he eventually jumped. too bad
