Still using the exact same cree bulbs I built in 2011/2012. 4 years and so far it's as follows: ~10 bulb replacements (went to plastic splash shields and now no failed bulbs), and one ballast (out of 11).
If I did it again, I would build the same setup, but I -may- add in a T5 strip in the center, just to get all the bases covered. Still, after an initial $$ investment, it's been less than $60 in upkeep. I used to spend that every couple of months on bulbs!
