Hey all! I'm looking into getting a skimmer for my new reef tank set up and I was wondering what types of skimmers you'd recommend. I'm looking into getting either a bubble magus or an swc. Which of the two do you recommend? Thanks!

Pulp has a vertex in 100 I think that would work if you are looking for something used. The super reef October xp cones are a good bang for your buck, come with the bubble blaster 3 ye warranty. Swc are also a very good value but I thought they are not being made any more..... Correct me if wrong.  Bill has some decent skimmers with a red dragon pump.  I don't know much about them but worth looking into.

The vertex IN line is a good bang for your buck. We will be offering the new CSC brand, formerly skimz with sicce pumps. From what I've seen they look like they will be great units at affordable prices.

I thought Skimz has a full new lineup of skimmers using DC waveline pumps?

I've found a bubble magus nac7 and an swc 160 that I really like that are proper size for my new system. Which of the two is worth the money? Both are brand new.

All I'm going to say is that both of those use the atman 2500 pump, and internal pump design.  the atman pump is a piece of crap, and almost impossible to replace when it fails (and it will). I tried everywhere to get a 120V replacement (they're almost all 220), and even the ones that were listed online as a 120 turned out to be labeled wrong.  I even tried to do a conversion (which is why I ended up with a sicce 2500 pump), but ended up giving up. The swc is built better than the magus (which is a cheap chinese discount brand).  I ran the swc and a reef octopus side by side for a month and the octopus outperformed by a large margin.  http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/protein-skimmers/octopus.html/

There's no question it's a terrible design, the cord is at a crazy angle, and for whatever reason the resin they use in the pumps is crap, allowing water into the internals of the pump.  I leaked voltage for about 6 months before I figured out where it was coming from... crap crap crap.

Do we need to go here again.... No need for the haters to be coming out against SWC.
Some ZAKK guy had the same misconceptions about a year back :? :? :? :?

I run the SWC 160 Cone, and I know many others who do and it is great bang for the buck.

If you can get one, grab it.

There have been issues reported with the pump, however with proper maintenance you should have no issues. Keep it clean.
Also the Red Devil pump can replace the Atman if neccessary.

Check out this thread from last year, nothing has changed. :D

That was a quick scan.  You'll  see recurring issues with the pump and especially the meshwheel (which breaks and jams easily) which is too bad, because it doesn't work as well with the pinwheel.

I did a lot of research trying to get my old BM skimmer to work, including a mod that would have let me use the sicce pump.

A lot of good information, as there is evidence that the pump can have issues.
Remember, people usually only post when they are having problems.
Those without issues tend not to post.

You aren't having any problems and you post all the time about it  ;D
