I would like to stain/seal my frag table/work area. I was wondering if I stained this if it would affect my tank which is literally right on the stand
Thoughts or suggestions would be great, I also plan on siliconing between the stand and the tank, so it's completely waterproof.

it looks like plywood, primer and paint might be a better option.

Is that old oil based stain? Looks like cans been sitting in a barn/shed for awhile lol. Definitely from a farm :)

If it was me, I wouldn't stain and would paint with no fume paint and primer, multiple coats.... or screw down a pieces of acrylic and then silicone on this to the tank to make waterproof.

Would hold off on the stain, there are better options, and stain alone doesn't really do well with water. Like Adam said you would need a urethane or something overtop of the stain.

yes its 1' plywood,

DO NOT STAIN THAT CLOSE TO YOUR TANK!!!!

im aware there are issues with the tank being close, else i wouldve just went and done it... but im wondering how i can get around the fumes or any other obstacles..

As mentioned that stain will only color the wood not protect it from moisture. Get a tintable outdoor deck stain it will give you color and protection. As for close to the tank that is not an issue if your careful. Cover the tank with plastic and tape it down. Turn off the skimmer or use a long air hose so it is in fresh air. Make sure the area is well ventilated and use fans to help clear the air out as well. I have not found a zero VOC paint that will stand up to saltwater.

got to the dollar store and get those vinyl sheets used to line kitchen drawers. stick a couple of them down. They will do the job and look ever so Martha Stewert-ish!

you can use a water based product that has very minimal fumes. i recommend a product called nano floor finish. its a blue can and you can readily get it at the depot. i use it on all my custom aquarium stands and it holds up perfect. You can use it to seal the plywood whether you paint it or stain it.

I would use either cutting board plastic, or HPW (I think that is the letters) it is a non reactive plastic. Its what I will eventually have as a bench top. Things like crazy glue wouldn't stick to it.

Water proof, easy to clean, win all around. Oh, and it is toolable. So, to put a "trench" around the back two edges, to direct the water to the front is easy to do.

Or, build a plexi tray to sit there. Wouldn't need to be heavy duty, just functional.

Feel free to drop me a line.

Just kidding lol
I love living on a farm, I could prob build a house with all the building supplies we have :)

I found some 1/2" acrylic / plastic in the shop, cut it up and screwed it down and put silicone all around the edges and screws.

Looks pretty decent if I must say so myself :)
